Pistachio – Mercedes Sprinter with large bed and extensive kitchen

After renting a camper in the summer for two years, we drew our dream layout on a terrace in France in 2019: a large fixed bed and a kitchen with lots of space. Early 2020 we converted this Mercedes Sprinter bus, exactly as we wanted it. We used as many human-friendly materials as possible inside, insulation with isovlas, cork and recycled wood.

The bus is from 2010 and has an automatic transmission, a 130 hp diesel engine and rear drive. It drives like a dream and the automatic transmission makes it easy to drive away. The bus is 6 meters long and therefore fits just in a normal parking space, and is 2 meters wide (without mirrors) so you can also get where you need to be on smaller roads. In the mountains you can shift manually if necessary. There is an extensive radio with bluetooth so you can play your own Spotify list from your phone :-). You can also view the rear view camera on the radio, very useful when parking.

The bus has a large comfortable bed of 200x140 with slatted base and thick mattress, so this bus is definitely suitable for tall people. The standing height is ~ 1.90 in the middle, by using cork on the ceiling we managed to keep as much height as possible. Under the bed are 3 large drawers to store clothes, so everything is within reach. The kitchen has 5 drawers to store all your kitchen utensils and supplies, and a compact fridge.

The bus has two (normal) 230V sockets that run on an inverter, for example to plug in a hand blender, laptop charger or kettle (up to 1000W). There is a sturdy household battery (~ 1.5 kWh) and a solar panel on the roof, so we actually never plug in at campsites, the solar panel usually provides enough.
Next to the bed are storage bins for books, for example. At the head end there is a reading light and a larger lamp on both sides, and on both sides also a USB socket to charge your phone at night.

There are ceiling lights in the kitchen and a lamp above the cabin for extra (mood) lighting.

The passenger bench can be turned around to create a spacious bench in the living area. To do this, you fold the seat away and turn the whole thing (system comes from England, especially for Sprinters). The advantage is that in good weather you can easily park the bus and cook and sleep without having to convert anything. The next day you can drive away again. If you have a bad weather day, you can turn the bench around so that you can sit inside more easily (but we often sit on the bed ourselves).

We rent the bus as we use it ourselves, so with kitchenware (dishes + pans). You also get a table and comfortable (lounge) chairs (with footstools!). You have to bring your own duvet and linen.

Its name is Pistachio but the color green is still a work-in-progress ;-).
