Aside from its astounding natural beauty, the island is filled with charming towns like Tejeda and Arucas, which combine traditional Canarian culture and modern attractions seamlessly. We’ve rounded up the best destinations in Gran Canaria, all of which you can visit in the comfort of a campervan.
1. Maspalomas Dunes
Let’s start this list of the best places to visit in Gran Canaria with a real winner: Maspalomas Dunes. This incredible nature reserve is filled with rolling sand dunes, giving the unique impression of a mini desert by the sea. Park nearby and stroll through the dunes — although we recommend emptying your shoes afterwards to avoid bringing the beach into your motorhome!
After getting your bearings, head to the Maspalomas Lighthouse. Located at the edge of the dunes, this is an iconic landmark that dates all the way back to the 19th century. You can climb to the top of the lighthouse for panoramic views of the dunes and coastline. Nearby, you’ll find shops and restaurants, as well as oceanfront paths from which to enjoy the sunset.
Don’t hesitate to also just relax at Maspalomas Beach. You deserve a break! This beautiful beach stretches along the dunes and offers clear waters for swimming, beach cafes, and plenty of space to sunbathe. If you can’t sit still for long, try your hand at the many watersports available here, including jet skiing, parasailing, windsurfing, kitesurfing and stand-up paddleboarding.
2. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
Second on our Gran Canaria road trip is the island’s capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. A mix of historic charm and vibrant modernity, this is a must-see while visiting the island. The Historic Old Town is known as Vegueta and is filled with cobbled streets, colonial architecture, and historic landmarks. Don’t miss the Catedral de Santa Ana, the Casa de Colón (Columbus House), and the lively Plaza de Santa Ana.
For some culture, visit the Museo Elder de la Ciencia y la Tecnología (Elder Museum of Science and Technology). This interactive science museum is a fun and educational experience for all ages. With hands-on exhibits, a planetarium, and even a flight simulator, the Elder Museum offers a unique way to explore science and technology. It’s a more dynamic museum experience that can catch the attention of little ones and old[er] ones alike.
We’re ready to mention another beach and trust us, this won’t be the last on this list. Las Canteras is one of the best urban beaches in Spain, with golden sand, clear waters, and a vibrant promenade. You can swim, snorkel, or relax under the sun, and there are plenty of restaurants, bars, and shops along the seafront. It’s a favourite spot for locals and visitors alike to enjoy the beach without even leaving the city.
3. Roque Nublo
Every list of the best things to do in Gran Canaria will include Roque Nublo, and you’ll quickly understand why. This massive rock formation is the third highest point on the island of Gran Canaria, at 1,813m above sea level. It’s 80m tall and of volcanic origins, which provides its rich colour. Lace up your walking boots and hike the trail up to Roque Nublo itself, a moderate route that takes about 30-45 minutes one-way. From the top, you’ll have breathtaking panoramic views over Gran Canaria and, on clear days, neighbouring islands like Tenerife. If possible, tackle this route at sunrise for an unbeatable view!
If you feel like another hike, head to nearby Pico de las Nieves, the highest point on the island. It’ll offer incredible views of Roque Nublo, the surrounding valleys, and rugged terrain. Alternatively, you can also drive up here in your van to give your legs a break.
Finally, something a little less taxing on your body! Drive to the nearby village of Tejeda, which is known for its traditional Canarian charm and almond-based sweets. You can wander through its picturesque streets, visit local artisan shops, and enjoy a meal with views of Roque Nublo in the distance. This mountainous village is a hidden gem that not everyone gets to enjoy while visiting Gran Canaria.
4. Puerto de Mogán
Welcome to the “Venice of the Canary Islands!” This charming village is filled with colourful canals, beautiful beaches, cosy cafes, and delightful restaurants. You can stroll along the marina, admire the boats, and enjoy the relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere.
Another day, another beach. This time it’s Playa de Mogán. This sandy beach is perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and enjoying the warm Canarian weather. Thanks to its calm, clear waters, you can relax knowing little ones are safe splashing about. You can also rent sun loungers and umbrellas at a low price to treat yourself to a luxurious afternoon. If you get thirsty or peckish, head to the beachside cafes and restaurants.
Aim to visit Puerto de Mogán in time for their Friday market. This bustling market features local crafts, clothing, fresh produce, and souvenirs. It’s a great place to pick up unique gifts or sample local specialities.
5. Tejeda
Next on our road trip in Gran Canaria is Tejeda, a charming mountain village that many consider to be the most beautiful destination on the island. Tejeda is famous for its almond trees and traditional sweets made from almonds. Try the local bienmesabe (a dessert made from almonds, honey, and eggs) and other almond-based pastries and treats in one of the village’s bakeries. Then, it’s time to head to a scenic viewpoint outside the village. Mirador de Degollada de Becerra offers stunning panoramic views of Roque Nublo, Roque Bentayga, and the rugged mountains of Gran Canaria. The volcanic scenery will make the perfect backdrop, so aim to visit in time for sunrise or sunset when the lighting is just right.
6. Barranco de Guayadeque

At Restaurante Tagoror, you can try authentic Canarian cuisine and enjoy local dishes like papas arrugadas (wrinkled potatoes) with mojo sauce. Aside from the excellent flavours, you’ll get the added rustic charm of a cave setting.
7. Agaete and Puerto de las Nieves
It’s a two-in-one for this stop on your Gran Canaria road trip! Let’s start at Agaete, a picturesque village on the northwestern coast of Gran Canaria. Agaete is known for its Las Salinas, a set of natural saltwater pools formed by volcanic rock, which are the perfect way to cool down on a sunny day. The pools are connected to the sea, so you can expect the occasional waves.
Head to the Agaete Valley, famous for its coffee plantations, fruit orchards, and vineyards. While here, visit Bodega Los Berrazales, a family-owned winery and coffee plantation, to tour and taste locally produced wine, coffee, and tropical fruits.
The next stop is Puerto de las Nieves, a nearby coastal village. It features a charming promenade lined with seafood restaurants serving fresh fish and Canarian dishes. The Museo Etnográfico Casas Cuevas offers insight into life in these unique dwellings, with exhibits showcasing traditional furniture, tools, and artefacts.
Right after, head to the Ermita de la Cuevita. This small chapel, built into the rock, is a sacred place for locals and offers a peaceful, spiritual atmosphere. Dedicated to the Virgen de la Cuevita, the chapel is unique and beautiful, blending seamlessly into its cave surroundings.
